Pablo Picasso once said: “to draw, you have to close your eyes and sing”. Nothing speaks more deeply to the heart and soul than art for it has been man’s divine mode of expression that transcends time and space. It breaks down all barriers and brings the whole world together, even for a short time.

Cebu has always been a melting pot of cultures, whether regional or international influences. There is so much to tell, be it its history, its people and its local culture, Cebu always has something to say and offer.

This collective love for culture and the arts was on full display at the Cebu Art Book Fair as artists from different parts of the province came together to celebrate and share their stories through various artistic mediums.

The two-day event highlighted the Cebuano slang of “Estoryang Binotbot” which relates to familiar experiences in which you cannot tell if the story is true or false. It’s a nod to the Cebuano attitude of the “binugoy” way of conversing with friends and family.

The event took place at Crossroads Banilad and it was fully effective with booths showcasing several works by incredibly talented artists. Experts and newbies alike came together to share their passion for the arts, and they didn’t disappoint the general public as throngs of people came to see what these artists had in store for them.

The event kicked off with the “Estoryang Binotbot” poster exhibition held at the Qube Gallery, where artists exhibited posters from their perspective on the theme. Alongside the Poster Exhibition, the Art Book Fair also took place in the main exhibition space (The Playground).

The Art Book Fair is a celebration of art in print. It featured artists, writers, designers, photographers, and more. mostly from Cebu and featured their self-published books, zines, postcards and stickers.

One of the print works that have been sold is the “PALABRA in Print”, a culmination of works by the pioneering group of the Bachelor of Arts in Literary and Cultural Studies with Creative Writing program.

Other forms of media were also celebrated. RetasoCast hosted a live podcast in the main exhibition space and to wrap up the first day, several local bands came to honor the event in a “Not So Secret Show” featuring local artists Mandaue Nights and Sepia Times , and Cagayan de Oro KRNA. The arts and music community have combined effortlessly to create magic by powerfully connecting everyone in an incredibly special and profound way.

The second day featured workshops given by famous artists. The “Express: A Guide to Self-Expression” workshop with artist Andre Chan explored the tool of art to develop self-confidence and stable self-perception.

Another workshop led by award-winning poet Lawrence Ypil and award-winning illustrators Happy Garaje focused on the nuances of art and the gas in between. Attendees who attended these workshops were sure to get incredible insight into these artists, as they catered to both writers and illustrators.

The Cebu Art Book Fair has brought together the best of Cebu’s art community, and it is hoped that more artists will show up to show and share their stories through the creative process. This event not only promises more artists to show up and share their work, but it also serves as a northern store for those yearning for a space where their art will be enjoyed by many.
