According to the Mumbai Fire Department (MFB), the incident happened around 5 p.m. on the ground floor of the store, located in the century-old four-story Somaiya Bhavan building near the Flora Fountain.
The fire was classified as level 2 (L2) and eight fire engines and six jetties were dispatched to the scene. According to fire officials, nearly 30 people were evacuated from the building during firefighting operations.
Kitab Khana’s management took to Twitter and wrote: “The fire broke out earlier in the evening and the situation is under control. We will issue an official update later this evening.”
Also responding to the tweet, one of the officials said: “The building has not caught fire, everyone is safe, we will share an official statement by tonight”
Although no casualties were reported at the scene, firefighters predicted the loss of property worth Rs 1 crore.
“A stock of books worth millions of rupees was destroyed by the fire, and the water used to put out the fire caused further damage,” the official said.
